Tennis Instruction: Boris Becker - Tennis Passing-Shot PDF Print E-mail

Tennis Instruction: Boris Becker a great serve and volley player demonstrates here that to be #1 you need to have all the shots and a corageous passing-shot is one of them.

Boris by nature was a risk taker and that made him an exciting player to watch and a severe headache for his opponents.

Nothing better then a real story to illustrate it:

In 1988 I was at the Stockholm Open in the Koenig Tennishalle in the players change room and there was Boris Becker laying on a massage table with a severely swollen sprained ankle on ice.

After taking a good look at it and listening to Bill Norris it was obvious that playing the final the next day was out of the question!

Perhaps that is what was on Peter Lundgren(s) mind as well.

For Becker the stakes were high if he played the next day he could risk further injury and perhaps no more tournaments indoors as well as a possible no preparation in the winter for the 1989 season. A potential disaster!

The next day Becker practiced just a few minutes with a highly bandaged ankle and gingerly walked out of the court.

Poker face but obviously in pain Becker walks back into the change room the ankle was awfully swollen. But he insisted he would play in the afternoon. And so he did!

In a demonstration of stoicism and 'madness' Boris played the final literally on one foot and beat a shocked Peter Lundgreen in a best of 5 sets final without dropping a set!

If I had not seen what I saw with my own eyes I would not have believed it! But I did and that was what Becker was about.

Risk taking! Becker 6-4 6-1 6-1

It was not about the money or the title, Boris was a multi-millionaire and an established player then, it was about the public, the tournament, the fans and the game.

And that is why he was a crowd favorite he earned it!
