Tennis Instruction: Feliciano Lopez Backhand Slice Approach PDF Print E-mail

Tennis instruction: Feliciano Lopez makes a picture perfect tennis backhand slice approach, but as he moves to close into the net he makes one of the five cardinal sins in the tennis approach shot:

Lopez does not follow the line of the ball on his attack and moves prematurely to the center of the court, therefore paying the heavy price of being passed by an alert Roger FedererRoger Federer (Link to Amazon).  Remember when you attack or approach the net (Always) follow the trajectory of the ball you've just played.

Five 'secrets' to the approach shot:

1.- As much as you can keep the ball deep and low (skidding with underspin)

2.- As your ball is in flight use this fraction of time to close in to the net (generally the split step area)

The kind of acceleration needed for this, is what I call 'elastic speed' almost like the formula one cars Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) ‘boost button’, but here it is your leg speed

3.- Always follow the line of the ball you just hit, as if you were attached to the ball by a string that pulls you towards it. (Never feel tempted to cover the center of the court!)

4. 'Give' your opponent the open spot usually the cross court passing

This is the 'secret' of great volley players, they bait you to play right were they want you to

5. Once your adversary took the bait quickly move forward diagonally and poach the volley down the line for a winner!

Last pointer remember that the approach has to give you time to get past the service line and split step. An approach is an approach not a winner, trust yourself.
