Tennis Instruction: The serve and volley has a combination of elements, one of them is a strong split-step at the moment your opponent makes ball contact (or slightly earlier) Andy Roddick does just that at a professional level. Even though Andy is a powerful server he is not a natural serve and volley player which often makes for very embarrassing moments for him. Nevertheless Rodick should continue to pursue improvement in this area, especial the volleys themselves, because for an athlete of his size running around the baseline is not the best option. Besides, he could make his life a lot easier by getting some free or easy points at the net.
