How to hit a basic tennis high forehand topspin ground stroke? PDF Print E-mail
Jul 13, 2008 at 09:55 PM

This tennis high forehand topspin shot is very often a misunderstood stroke especially by beginners and intermediate tennis players alike.

Why?

Tennis teachers tend to emphasize the importance of the low to high motion for the topspin forehand and that sometimes will stay in the pupils mind often in detriment of a future important shot the high forehand.

So how do I hit a high forehand topspin ground stroke?

As I always say keep it simple.

If you found your right forehand grip it should be a breeze!

The backswing.

- Take racket back holding the racket head up high and aiming at the highest point of the ball bounce slightly drop the racket head when you start your forward swing.

The forward swing

- Once you targeted the ball keep the racket head swinging upward at shoulder level and hit the ball early at the top with a slight downwards topspin to get it inside the court.

As you become more confident and advanced you can jump onto these high balls to hit them ever earlier and generate more punch through your elastic energy.

But first stay on the ground until you develop a solid high forehand ground stroke.

Tennis instruction often has its pitfalls so beware of teachers telling you to back off, take a few side steps backwards and wait for the ball to bounce drop low and then hit the ball on the descent.

This type of advice will get you used to step back 10 to 12 feet behind the baseline giving up control of the court to your opponent who will get inside the court to punish your likely return.

Do not do it!

Learn to be courageous from early stages even if it will be at the cost of a few silly mistakes, but as you get bigger and stronger or more confident, your opponents will known that you will hit those high balls early and punish them for winners.

The girl on the video will demonstrate how to do it.

As I have said before I prefer letting young players develop their own grips, I do not teach them, but I rather let them find out.

In this case I will show you the grip the girl in the video found for herself.

Notice how she fights to stay close to the line.

There you have it, keep it simple, keep it high and you will have a lethal high forehand forever!
