The End Of An Era - Remember Andre Agassi? PDF Print E-mail

Tennis is an unforgiving sport heros do not last long, there are surely younger and even older players that do not even know who Andre Agassi was, or how good he was.

Andre Agassi, was the most recognizable figure in professional tennis 1986-2006, announced his retirement from professional tennis after the 2006 US Open, two years ago only. Agassi was 36 years old at that time and his tennis career spanned 20 years. He was regarded as a master of the sport and held in high regards by other professional tennis players.

Agassi dawned into the eyes of the public with an emphatic win at Wimbledon in 1992. Nobody gave him a chance to win in the finals because of his baseline playing method. However, Agassi went on to prove his critics wrong.

Agassi is one of the only five players in the men s tennis to have won all the four Grand Slams. He has also won 8 major titles during his career which is regarded as a significant achievement given the unpredictable world of professional tennis.

Though one can not say that it has been a smooth run for Agassi. In 1997 due to injury, Agassi saw his ranking plummet to #141 in the world. However, like a true athlete he clawed his way up the ranking. He played in two Challenger events to increase his ranking.

Known for his free spirit and philanthropy, Agassi has donated millions of dollars over the years to help under-privileged children in Las Vegas, his hometown. He founded the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation that is still continuing the good work.

Andre Agassi is missed from tennis and he was one player who brought adventure and fun to the game. Given his achievement and status in tennis, Agassi will never be forgotten and his name will be written in golden letters in the annals of tennis.
