The Approach-Shot Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska PDF Print E-mail

The approach shot and why many top players do not get it!?

The tennis approach-shot is such a crucial shot at all levels of tennis, that it is hard to believe that tennis players that spend 5 to 6 hours a day practicing their skills, still fall prey to their own undoing when it comes to executing an ATTACK!.

Just recently I was watching a match on TV between Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska and the first point I saw was this one:

backhand approach-shot
Frame 1:
Radwanska off of a cross-court backhand from Azarenka hits a very hard cross-court backhand from behind the baseline and moves in and goes to the net.

What was the right approach placement for Radwanska?
Down the line.
Why?
Because by going cross-court, she left herself completely vulnerable to the down the line passing shot and her opponent did not have to move at all to reach the ball. The down the line attack would have avoided it.

Was it a good decision from Radwanska to attack from behind the baseline?
No. Generally you should attack on short balls inside the baseline instead.

Was it a good choice from Radwanska to hit a very hard topspin backhand?
Besides the fact that she should not have attacked on such a deep ball, by hitting the ball very hard she did not have enough time to get to the net, as a consequence she had to volley a low ball behind the service line.

What should Radwanska have done?
Given the bad choice she made to begin with, the best solution would have been to attack with a much slower deep ball (preferably slice backhand approach) and that would have given her more time to get inside the service box and perhaps even have a chance at a much higher ball to hit a winning volley. Anyhow the attack should have been down the line.

Frame 2:
Azarenka takes one step to the ball and hits the ball cross-court back to Radwanska, who barely made it to the service line and is totally out of position, but thanks to Azarenka playing back to her still makes a backhand volley.

What should Azarenka have done?
The obvious was to nail that passing shot down the line into the open court and completely out of reach for Radwanska.

Frame 3:
Radwanska with Azarenka staying put on the left side once again plays the volley back cross-court to Azarenka, leaving herself more 6 meter (18 feet) away from a possible up the line passing shot from Azarenka who once again did not need to move to hit the next ball.

What was the right volley placement for Radwanska?
The right play would have been a down the line volley. Make Azarenka run to the right side at least 8 meters (24 feet) and challenge her to pass with much less angles. In addition while Azarenka was running Radwanska would have have time to close in have a go at a winning volley, which was not the case with the cross-court volley, where she gave herself no time to move forward because Azarenka only had to make one step to be in position to pass and second because the gap she had left for the passing was mission impossible to cover for.

Frame 4
With an easy backhand cross court volley hit right at her, all Arazenka had to do was hit into the open court and thank you Radwanska!

The next frame shows you the full sequence of the approach shot point.

What transpired to me in all of this and made me write this article? The TV commentary:

- 'Great passing shot by Azarenka!'

For me it is absolutely unacceptable to have someone making professional commentary on TV (gets well paid for it) and leads the public to believe that a poorly constructed point that results in an easy passing shot, makes it a great shot!

What is in this for you? Be careful observe the points players are constructing and separate what is good from what is bad and choose to integrate the good parts into your game.

Keep enjoying your tennis!
