Monte Carlo Open Sheds Some Seeds! PDF Print E-mail
Apr 15, 2009 at 01:14 AM

The Monte-Carlo open seeds are falling and with it the usual excuses and explanations.

ATP number 7 Gilles Simon goes down to qualifier Benjamin Beck and says:

'This match was completely rotten from the first to the last point,” lamented Simon. “I'm surprised myself. I felt at ease on this surface. I was moving well. But I don't remember ever playing so badly. Nothing was right. Nothing was working. My forehand, my backhand, my serve, nothing.'

What he forgets to say is that Beck just did not let him play the way he would have liked to!

Players often forget the motto 'You are as good as your opponent allows you to be!'

Beck just did not let Simon play or look good.

Seed number 9 Gail Monfils went down to Janko Tipsarevic and said:

'There's not much to say about that match,' said Monfils, who was broken five times in total and drops to 15-8 on the season. 'I'm just trying to get used to clay-court conditions. I need to work more with Roger (Rasheed) and then confidence will come back.'

What Gail forgets to mention is that lower ranked Tipsarevic also beat him at an ATP World Tour Challenger in Zagreb two years ago.

Fabio Fognini No.108th-ranked Italian handed a humbling blow to World No. 25 Tomas Berdych 1-6, 6-3, 6-3

Nicolas Almagro No. 16 seed, who last year amassed an impressive 30-8 clay-court record (most wins),  lost to fellow Spanish and World No. 36 Albert Montanes 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(5) in two and a half hours.

Are we looking at a new tennis world order? Or is it that the clay is just making its yearly adjustments? Yet, is it that having to report your where abouts for one hour every day to the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) is taking its toll on the players nerves?

Who knows what the real reasons are? One thing is for sure, the seeds are falling like ripe fruit from the trees!

Let us follow the Monte Carlo open with curiosity and see what happens to the top seeds.

Regarding the new WADA policies ... no rules committee or drug agency will ever be able to make any sport completely clean, because there is too much money, too much fame, too much ego encouraging people to win at any cost. HOWEVER, I strongly agree that the current efforts toward cleaning up sports MUST continue to be made, because a 98% clean game is much better than a 90% clean game. And the shame of exposure as a cheater remains a big deterrent to those competitors who are not sociopathic. What will be interesting to watch with professional tennis is ... WHO is going to be the first big star to be suspended for a LONG time for blood doping or some other chemical crime? When will the WADA finally nail somebody in the Top 10 ... or Top 5 ?? There have been some very good players suspended in the past (Coria, Puerta, Korda), but never one of the superstars at the top of his game and in the prime of his career. That type of suspension would send a strong message for two reasons:

1) it would show that the governing body of tennis was willing to take millions of $$ in earning potential away from a top player ... and
2) more importantly, it would tell the fans that the ATP tour sees the integrity of the game as more important than the marketing and financial success of the Tour

If a player does not cheat, it should not bother him to reveal where he is for an hour each day. If the Tour wanted to know where you were for 24 hours each day, that would be an unacceptable personal intrusion on your privacy. The bottom line is ... each player has a choice. The Tour is a job. If they want to keep the job, they must abide by the rules of their employer, just as all workers at all companies must do all around the world every day of the week. If they don't like the rules, get another job!

Completely agree with you, JB, Nadal and Murray should get another job! :-))). Some US government agencies have stricter Drug test and enforcement rules then the WADA!
