Tennis Opportunity Knocks - Stuff of Dreams!
What is happening with Frederico Gil from Portugal is the stuff that dreams are made of! Here is a 24 year old player coming from a country that many consider to be a third world country and starts beating the daylights out of some of the best players in the world! Players who have opportunities in their countries, that Frederico Gil will never have in two or three lifetimes and neither will his successors in Portugal, are being subjected to the will of this fiery Portuguese! To give an idea of the enormity of the feat Frederico Gil has performed so far, I am going to cite some of his best results until now. Of course he has beaten dozens of other lesser players in the process, but these are the best: Almagro, Nicolas (ESP) ATP Nr.18 These are indeed world class results, certainly he has not beaten the Nr. 1 (who knows, he might as well do it!) and some of the names are not household names, but we must take in consideration that in 2003 at Roland Garros a certain Luis Horna ATP Nr. 88 beat in straight sets Nr.5 seeded and one of the pre tournament favorites ATP Nr. 6 Roger Federer 7-6(6) 6-2 7-6(3) Here is what makes Frederico Gils tennis career so interesting and at the same time so disheartening. In spite of his tremendous sacrifices to achieve what he has achieved, he turned Pro in 2003 and until 2009 so far he has earned; This year Prize Money: $104,399 and a total 6 year career prize money Prize Money: $427,425! For many out there these would be staggering numbers, but let us break this down: - Six years since Gil turned Pro, represents $71,237 US dollars average income a year. Great money! Wait a minute! We have to deduct 33% direct tax the ATP collects from your check and sends to your country or - $23,508 US dollars This leaves Frederico Gil with an average yearly income of $47,7729 US dollars Well, still great money for the average person around the world, but Frederico Gil has many more commitments than the average person: - He has to pay all of his flights around the world (anywhere from $12,000 to $25,000) - He has to pay his Coaches flights around the world (anywhere from $12,000 to $25,000) - He has to pay for all extra expenses and incidentals while traveling (for himself and his coach) - He has to pay for his tennis training and coaches services when he is off the Tour - He, as a decent player, must seek the services of a good physical conditioning trainer - He needs Sports Medicine support-you do not win world class tennis matches and recover on spaghetti and vitamins alone! - He needs to pay for his living costs in Portugal (unless he still leaves at Hotel Mom and Dad!) - He may have to pay for a car, car insurance, gas and maintenance costs while at home The list is a lot more extensive than this but you already have a good idea and to be nice, very nice, even if Frederico Gil pays his coaching staff "slave" wages, he still has to deal with at least a whopping $100,000 US dollars in expenses a year! How can Frederico Gil and his coaching/training staff survive on the ATP Tour? - He may have some sponsors in Portugal - but the market for tennis apparel and tennis rackets in Portugal is so dismal that I doubt he can get anything to brag about! - He may get a measly amount of money from the Portuguese government/Federation - He may get some 'guarantee money', yes I know it is 'forbidden' by ATP rules (we make an exception in Portugal for struggling players) Nevertheless, whatever the numbers are and no matter how we squeeze them there is only so much to go around and that's not much! After we have taken a realistic, unbiased look at the economics of being a professional tennis player, now it is where the opportunity lies within Frederico Gils tennis career and he has to get a hold of it with both hands and try to run with it as far as he can. Frederico Gils current South African Airways ATP Ranking is Nr. 71, this will allow him direct entry in some tournaments but, not all, especially in the coming winter in 32 or 64 draws. Where are the BIG ATP points and cash cow career makers or career breakers? Australian Open, French Open (Roland Garros), Wimbledon and US Open! Now and in the next 3 years he has to completely focus and prepare to make a break through in one or more of these Grand Slam tournaments. And by that I mean get to the quarters or semis or even final in one of them! And why not win it!? It sounds crazy, but it is doable because: - Frederico Gil for the first time does not have to play the grueling Grand Slam qualifying rounds that take so much out of him previous to the main draw. Now, Gil is straight in the main draw! - He has no fear, is confident and he has proven to be able to face off anyone and beat them too. - He is 24 years young, fit, strong and hungry. - He can play well on any surface. - He needs a favorable draw (a bit of luck). - He is the underdog. Crowds love underdogs. - The press loves a story, he is the story! All other tournaments are important especially the Masters 1000 (where he is also in the main draw in most outdoors), but he needs to prepare intelligently and focused on the Grand Slams. The Grand slams are the ticket to riches and true recognition worldwide. This is the shot of a life time that many do not realize they have had because they were far too busy making a living in the smaller tournaments and did not take their chances seriously at the Grand Slams. Frederico Gil has this fantastic opportunity knocking at his door now, he must not let it go without a real fight! Focus on the Grand Slams, now! And yes! Believe, believe, believe! Sergio Cruz
