A Deserved Madrid Open for Roger Federer! PDF Print E-mail

Roger Federer took the Crown at the Madrid Open! Did he deserve it?

In recent weeks I have been pretty harsh on Roger Federer not for the pleasure of castigating Roger, but rather because tennis needs Roger and it would be a great loss to the game to see him fading away so rapidly.

Today we all knew that Rafael Nadal was pretty tired from the 4hrs and some odd minutes match against Djokovic and indeed Nadal was far from his best, nevertheless we can not take merit away from Roger Federer win.

First Roger was more determined than ever to win this title and conditions were saying yes to him.

-  Roger found the rhythm of his service after long months struggling with it.

- The forehand in spite of a couple of hick-ups held steady and the winner quota was positive.

- The backhand had its ups and downs but held steady when needed.

- The tactical use of the drop-shot from the backhand side worked

- The slice backhand mix was just enough.

- The serve and volley variations were mostly successful.

But Roger has to thank Djokovic for one and than the following:

- Madrid is at 667 m (2,188 FT) altitude almost 3 times higher then Basel at 244 m Rogers home town. These conditions favor Rogers game.

- The ball in Madrid fly much faster and bounce higher

- The backhand slice works better and skids faster

- Attacks either serving and volleying or from the ground are more effective.

- Nadal could not adjust to the speed of the ball and his topsin forehand did not bother Federer.

- The court was fast and dry, which allowed Federer, to finish points and hit more winners.

- Nadals unforced error quota was atrocious for his level and the backhand went South.

All in all conditions favored Roger Federer, but let us not forget that appart from Romes clay that can somewhat play similar, in all other clay court tournaments Rafael Nadal is the beneficiary.  So I do not feel sorry that for once Nadal had to lose!

The match in itself was not the best between the two, but it showed that Federer ever since Rome put in some serious work on and off the court and these are very encouraging news for the future.

On the other hand Roland Garros which is approaching very fast remains the main question.  Is Roger Federer ready to win Roland Garros?  I and perhaps millions of us would like to say, YES! Common sense though, says, No! Not this year.

But this thing of predicting matches is worst than the lottery, so I stay away from both, let the story develop and just hope Roland Garros will present us with plenty of excitement.

In the meantime, Congratulations for the Madrid Open title Roger! Great effort, we want Roger Federer for many more years. COME ON!!!!!!!!

Everything fell into place perfectly for Roger in Madrid:

1) The court plays fast for clay (higher altitude)
2) Rafa was tired from a 4 hour semi with Djokovic
3) Federer had a great draw (Soderling, Blake, Roddick, del Potro)
4) Rafa failed on all 4 of his break chances ... Roger had only 2, but won them both (only a couple points made the difference)

And of course we know the REAL reason why Federer won. It was all that high altitude training he did in Italy !! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :)

Regardless of the reasons for the outcome, it was good to see Roger regain some confidence. And the Nadal-Federer rivalry desperately needed for Roger to win one.
The fact that it was on red clay just makes it more interesting. Now Roger has beaten Rafa twice on clay (Hamburg & Madrid), but both times, Rafa was completely burned out from too much tennis.

Can Federer get the job done against Rafa in a best-of-5 sets match at Roland Garros with a 100% energetic Nadal? I don't think so.
BUT ... Verdasco, Djokovic and Murray are good enough to beat Nadal or at least wear him down in the later rounds, so Federer could get lucky and sneak through the same way he did in Madrid. At Roland Garros, the luck of the draw will be HUGE for Roger. He desperately needs for Verdasco and Djokovic to be in Nadal's quarters and semis.

After watching Roger Federer beat a weary Rafael Nadal in the finals at Madrid on sunday, the toughts of of hope come back always when you see a man overcome a long time mental plateau, or barrier for the first time in many years of consecutive failure. Before the Spanish crowd, in Nadal`s own country, Federer pulled a victory against strong odds. He even on one ocasion came to the net on his return of serve against Nadal, a tactic i had never seen before used by him against his nemesis. He lost that point, but he took it to him (Rafael), and was just a fraction of a second late on his footwork to make the volley, wich would have probably been an easy one for Rafa to make the passing shot cause the ball was dipping so badly, but he was there at the net, shaking his fears away. Even if Nadal`s performance may have taken the glory away from Federer`s victory, it still was a win for him, and it just may be the crack in the wall he needs to creep back to the top. Federer showed no emotion, or very little during the good plays he made, as if he had expected Rafa to loose on that day, or that maybe he had no emontions left to show before the crowd ( Nadal`s), because he expected to loose. Anyway, let`s see how he performs in the next tournament, after this probable best victory he has have in many years, all things considered here. Is someone new behind Roger now (coach), or is he still on his own ???
