Roland Garros Tennis Lessons - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - The Lion Effect!

As a natural serve and volley player and attacker by nature, nothing gives me more pleasure than watching the gutsy tennis Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is producing in this years French Open.

Jo-Wilfried just does everything right-even the mistakes and misses!

- As a tall man he cannot afford to be run around, so he takes things into his own hands and controls the play.

- Stays as close as possible to the baseline or inside of it.

- Strives to hit all balls early (on the ascent or at the top of the bounce).

- Tries to consistently control the center of the court and consequently put his opponents on the run to the corners.

- In spite of his devastating power his ground strokes have enough topspin for control and placement.

- When inside the court he goes for winners or goes to the net and tries to finish the points with the volley.

- When inside the court he mixes his awesome power with unexpected delicate drops shots and moves in behind.

- Uses his service as a weapon by going for aces when needed.

- Mixes his services well with power, spin and placement making it very uncomfortable to return.

- Serves and volleys at will on first or second serves as he chooses and according to the score.

- When volleying understands the principle of always moving towards the ball and bisecting the angle of the ball by cutting across (in diagonal) towards it.

- At the net he understands the no nonsense approach to volleying and executes (punishes) cross-court passing with down-line volleys and down-line passing with cross-court volleys.

- To add grief to his opponents he uses drop volleys and angle volleys masterfully.

- His athleticism gives power to jump high for overheads which allows him to close into the net without fear of the lob.

- When needed uses the backhand slice to attack or defend.

- Respects two of the fundamental aspects of the attack: always follow the line of the ball and goes up the lines 95 percent of the times.

The excuse of not going to the net because 'tennis has gotten much faster' does not apply to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga  because he belongs to an elite group of individuals who made tennis a complete game, that gets the on court crowd and TV watchers world wide excited and involved:

Roy Emmerson, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Yannick Noah, Pat Cash, Boris Becker, John McEnroe, Patrick Rafter, Pete Sampras and many others!

What excites me about Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is that when Roger Federer retires or his tennis fades, all round attacking tennis will live on!
