Roland Garros Tennis Lessons - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - The Angle Volley!

Smart play at the net dictates a strong court spatial awareness and understanding of your opponents positioning at the baseline. Everything happens so fast that there is no time to think or excitation.

You have to react fast, decide immediately and make it right once.  At the net you rarely receive the kindness of a second chance.

Jo-Wilfried does just that, he realizes that playing a short angle ball will catch his opponent moving in the wrong direction (expecting a deep volley up the line).

What does this do to your opponent if you follow Jo-Wilfred tactics?

- Your opponent will be always guessing what will you do next and therefore often of balance.

- You will wrong foot your opponent often.

- Make it very difficult for your opponent to reach the ball on a change of directions, where gravity is pulling him the other way.

- Your ball with slight under spin, will bounce low (difficult to scoop) and skid away pulling your opponent toward the tram lines and off of the court.

- While your opponent will be subjected to a gargantuan sprint effort, you comfortably may have to make two side steps and you are back in position to volley whatever your opponent may bring back in extremis.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga developed these skills over a period of time so can you, to have a good net game remember to develop solid tennis volleys first. Here is a file for beginners to intermediate players but, advanced players can benefit from it as well. Tennis Instruction: The Basics of How to Hit a Volley
