Roland Garros Tennis Lessons - Robin Soderling - Attack to counter the drop-shot!

Another answer to the the drop-shot, a common ruse in tennis, is the slice attack down the line.

Many players are not used to it and fall prey to this ruse but in fact it is very easy to counter and turn it to your advantage.

Robin Soderling in  this situation demonstrates how to counter a cross drop shot in the match against Gonzales in Roland Garros.

What does he do that allows him to counter the drop shot?

- He reads early that Francisco executes a cross court drop-shot behind the baseline from the backhand side.

- Robin also realizes that Gonzales stayed back in place instead of moving forwards.

- Because Soderling anticipates the drop-shot and quickly runs to it, opens two possibilities to himself, to counter drop shot or use a slice attack deep.

- Given the bad positioning of Francisco, Robin decides to go deep down the line with an aggressive slice.

- Gonzales does not even make it to try a passing shot or a defensive action.

- Soderling is well positioned at the net after following the line of the ball and the quality of his shot had assured him a dominant position.

This type of play is often called percentage play because even though it is not spectacular like a winner for example, it stacks 95 percent of the odds of you winning the point in your favor.

Some players (many in this era) often choose, from the same position as Robin, to attack deep cross court, which is fatal because it leaves a huge gap for their opponents to pass them at ease down the line on the other side.

Anyway, the down the line slice approach is an effective way to counter drop shots and create great headaches to your opponents.
