Wimbledon Tennis Lessons - Andrey Golubev - The high backhand volley!

Some players consider the high backhand volley as one of the most difficult shots in tennis. In my opinion it is a shot like any other and anyone can learn and execute it well.

As I said in my previous article about Andrey Golubev this young Kazakhstani man is a very complete package. He proves it in the way he executes a reasonably difficult high backhand volley with a clear mind and ease against an high level opponent such as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Of course what looks deceptively easy when  Andrey Golubev executes is for many a very difficult task because of the complexity of the movement combined with the racket work and the players mind.

Taking that into account we will explore why some say this particular shot is so difficult and on the other hand why I think anyone can do it!

Because this happened in Wimbledon I have to add the grass factor to it which makes it even easier to play the high backhand volley effectively.

Reasons why many players consider this volley soooo difficult!

- They make it to difficult themselves and wish to play the high backhand with the same violence as an overhead!

- They use the forehand grip instead of the continental or the semi-eastern

- They are over eager.

- They miss-time their jump.

On grass many of your defensive skills, are often better translated into aggression and by that I mean, going for your shots when pulled out of position than rather try go get back in play with a conventional defensive play.

Why do I think everyone can do it?

First you have to believe you can do it from a relaxed stand point of view. You just can do it.

- Like Andrey Golubev at Wimbledon start moving backward in diagonal and semi-turned toward the estimated point of impact.

- Move cat like, smooth unhurried and precise.

- As you are about to reach the point of impact while keeping your eyes on the ball (never let your eyes of the ball!) jump sort of backwards with your back almost fully turned toward the net and with racket arm stretched out ready to stroke behind the ball.

- Initiate contact by driving your stretched out arm almost as an unit (no bending of elbows) in a quarter circle across your body and using your shoulder joint as fulcrum. (This should be done with an almost stiff arm so to speak).

- A slight use of the wrist can be applied (but not necessary) and you will smoothly guide the ball to the desired spot.

Why, this is so much easier at the Wimbledon grass?

Simple, the angle you can create by smoothly depositing the ball towards the outer V in the service box and the fact that on grass with a bit of slice (wrist action) the ball will skid and fade away so bad from your opponent that he will not even attempt to reach it!

In this video Andrey Golubev  has pushed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga  so far out of position with his first shot that he will not even need as much angle as I mention (suggest).

Remember to stay calm and relaxed, you only need to apply a little tightness at contact and through the shot, the idea is to use the angle to out play your opponent rather then brute force or power.

Wimbledon Classic Match: Federer vs Sampras
In many ways Federer is much like the man he succeeded at the All England Club in 2001.

Federer showed his former idol the door with a sensational performance. The fourth-round thriller ended Sampras' remarkable reign - at least for the moment.

Sampras held a set point in the opening tiebrea...
Customer Review: Great look back at tennis history
The tennis here speaks for itself - two exquisite talents going for their shots - absolutely mind-blowing stuff. And it's just a plain old lot of fun to watch this match from a historical perspective. The commentators refer to Sampras as "The Great Man" and take the measure of the then-unproven Fe...
