Tennis Equipment - Grass Court Tennis Shoes!
Tennis and its equipment have evolved through centuries of trial and error. At Wimbledon for example there was a time where tennis was played with spike shoes, somewhat similar to the ones used for athletics. The reason for the use of such spiked shoes was simple, better footing and acceleration. The grip you got from such shoes was a tremendous advantage in a notoriously slippery surface such as grass is. Nevertheless, spike shoes had devastating effects on grass courts turning them into plowing fields. So competitive players were only allowed to use them in wet conditions (rain). After different approaches at solving the problem, shoe manufacturers developed the sole you see in the picture below, which is formed by hundreds of little rounded rubber dimples. This gives players a better grip, but if the court is slightly wet you will slide and fall like with any other shoe! At this point though this is the best compromise, between a better grip for the players and protecting the grass court.
Here is the video sequence of the grass court tennis shoes Roger Federer wore at the Wimbledon final. This is a long file be patient while it downloads.
