Is Andy Murray's service the best part of his game? PDF Print E-mail

Aug 21, 2009 at 06:38 AM

Andy Murray considers 'his tennis serve as the best part of his game' and I understand his point of view because he feels that it is what gives him the most security and were he possesses the greatest amount of control over what will happen next.

Nevertheless experience tells me that often athletes believe in things that make them feel the most comfortable instead of what they truly are about.

This is what makes high level competition such a complex set of events and circumstances for coaches and players themselves and in tennis more so because there is no clock to time the athlete or distance to cover.

In the end it is a series of aleatory elements that randomly are put together and often produce a result that the tennis player himself does not fully comprehend.

Therefore, many times in tennis it is all about how the athletes believe system works and not how reality plays up its cards.

Is this the case of Andy Murray?

If we analyze Murray's ATP tour SERVICE statistics as of week 17.08.2009:

ACES - Position 6

1ST SERVE PERCENTAGE - Position 38

1ST SERVE POINTS WON - Position 10

2nd SERVE POINTS WON - Position 6

SERVICE GAMES WON - Position 10

BREAK POINTS SAVED - Position 7

Now if we observe Andy's  ATP tour RETURN OF SERVICE statistics as of week 17.08.2009:

POINTS WON RETURNING 1ST SERVE - Position 1

POINTS WON RETURNING 2ND SERVE - Position 2

BREAK POINTS CONVERTED - Position 1

RETURN GAMES WON - Position 2

Surprise!  Andy Murray has a much stronger return of service game than his service!

Sure enough mentally Murray believes 'his serve as the best part of his game', God forbid if anyone tries to tell him otherwise and its rightfully ok not to tell him.

The good news for Andy are that he does not need to pressure himself to develop one of the most important and difficult parts of the game of tennis, that is the return of service.  At this point statistically Murray is the best return of service player in the world!

Now will Andy Murray  also become the best service player in the world to reach the Nr.1 spot in the ATP tour rankings?

Certainly he will! He already believes so!
