Cincinnati Tennis - Andy Murray pays the price of a ludicrous decision! PDF Print E-mail

Aug 23, 2009 at 03:50 AM
Yesterday I had the opportunity to watch the Cincinnati tennis semi-final match between Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Roger Federer, having lost the last 4 encounters against Murray, sure enough wanted revenge and wanted it bad!

So Federer decided from the onset of the match to exert pressure on Murray. I mean enormous pressure on everything Murray was not doing well and he succeeded in winning on a double fault from Andy. This double fault match point gift from Murray was a consequence of the previous constant pressure Roger had applied to Andy's 'weak' second serve.

Although I did like the way Roger Federer played; assertive, in control, attacking and strong, I saw a very worn out Andy Murray, still combative but running on an empty tank!

Talking about empty tank, with a car it is easy to refuel and I am positive Andy did that on his now renowned 798 mile (a little over 13 hour) car trip from Montreal to Cincinnati. You just stop at a tank station get the nozzle out and fill up the tank.

In tennis refueling is not that simple. It is plenty of rest, regeneration exercises, short footings, light training sessions, the right foods, plenty of sleep and you need a good amount of time for that.

So how responsibly was Andy Murray and his coaching staff preparing for a professional tennis tournament such as Cincinnati after Murray's energy sapping tournament win in Montreal?

Today when statistics on everything imaginable from how many times the player bounces the ball on the serve, to how many times the player blew his nose on the court the professional responsible preparation would be:

- Lets get Andy on a plane as quickly as possible to Cincinnati and give him as much rest, regeneration and adaptation time as possible.

Certainly not an exhausting 13+hours road trip, further taxing an already weary Murray, versus a two hour flight!

Oh well, who cares, if the organizers and sponsors of a 2 million dollar Professional tennis event or the ATP don't care and let themselves be subjected to the whims of a 22 year old spoiled brat why then should anyone else!

In the end, Roger Federer deservingly won the match and could say, 'I played intelligently'...among other self congratulatory words.

And let me add, with this win he also told the rest of the field, I am here and ready to take the US Open crown!
