Australian Open Justine Henin! Many of you have privately written to me to express your disagreement with my article, Justine Henin wears the pants at the Australian Open!
My words to that are: If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! And I will go further with my eulogy of Justine Henin! In comparison with 'Big' men like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Nikolay Davidenko and 99 percent of the ATP tennis players, she is a flea! But as you know the jump of a flea in comparison to mankind would the equivalent of a ten story building! In my mind that is the height which separates Justine Henin from the whole ATP group with a few exceptions Tommy Haas, Radek Stepanek and a couple of others. Some of you accuse me of being biased because I like serve and volley and that is why I write these harsh words. You could not be further from the truth: I simply believe tennis players men and women should develop the WHOLE range of possibilities tennis has to offer. And that includes volleying top level and serve and volleying as well. Do I mean attacking mindlessly all the time? No! - I mean attack when the opportunities are there, and I must tell you few men do, even when the opportunity is staring right there at their faces, some of them let balls bounce hit them and run back to the baseline, as if they saw a monster at the net! Am I exaggerating? No! If you pay attention you will see that happening before your very eyes at this Australian Open. Do I mean serve and volley at every point? No! - I mean an healthy mix of serve and volley, which will keep your opponent guessing all the time! - Which will force your opponent to try to return closer to the net tape and eventually give you some free points. - That will induce your opponent to seek the sidelines and therefore play the return out and give you another free point - Because you are at the net and he will not have any other choice he/she will play the ball to you for a put away volley! Because if you take the attack and the serve and volley out of the tennis equation, your game is so much poorer and your opponents will have a much easier time beating you! Of course it takes guts, courage, heart, determination, conviction, commitment, unyielding will, whatever...to do all of this and if you will. Tell me if any of these 'Big' men like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Nikolay Davidenko, will ever in their life time have the guts, the bravado, the vision, to one day serve and volley against any of of their closest peers at match point on a major? Justine Henin did just that yesterday! Those are exactly the reasons why I consider 'little' Justine Henin such a GIANT! Watching the Australian Open 2010 match Justine Henin against Elena Dementieva should be a must for ALL ATP and WTA tennis players and Coaches of today as well as for any young player who wants to be a complete tennis player. Tennis University Masters Degree for 101 students! Justine Henin may not win the Australian Open, but that is irrelevant, her tennis lesson was a Master course for tennis eternity! Enjoy! Sergio Cruz
