Is it enough? Not yet!
Finally after years of writing in vain for men tennis players to take a deep look at their games and start a 'new' era of attack tennis. Yes, I am bored of the same gutless cross court, down the line, backhands and forehands tennis. Tennis destitute of imagination, creativity and daring! Metronome tennis, even Federer entered the 'class'. Fortunately Justine Hennin bust back into the scene with a gutsy display of attacking tennis against Elena Dementieva which put many a man to shame! For me this was a great opportunity to drum up some interest in the serve and volley game and other attacking skills so desperately needed in mens tennis. Today I got rewarded and so was tennis and all spectators who had a chance to see the Rafael Nadal Andy Murray match! Andy Murray just put to rest a bunch of myths, such as: - Nowadays it is not possible to serve and volley. - The returns are so much better that it is impossible to serve and volley. - Roger Federer contention that; 'I do not go to the net because I get more tired than if i stay back!' (What a whimpy excuse I must say!) - The balls are much too slow to attack or serve and volley. -You have to hit the ball 150mph to have a chance at a volley. A litany of unfounded, biased and plain denial bunch of malarkey. Andy Murray put it to rest today attacked, served and volleyed to save game points, set points, break points and succeeded into subduing a surprised Nadal, who out of 12 break points only converted 2 points. Also considering that this ended up being a 2 set match and Murray attacked the net 28 times and won the point 22 times or 79 percent of his attacks! Not bad if you consider Nadal was on the other side! All I can say for sure is that Andy Murray took the kilt off for the first time in his life and when he looked down, to his surprise, he realized all it takes is exactly having what he was looking at to be a winner! Today tennis was the winner! Will this make Andy Murray the winner of the Australian Open this time? Perhaps not, but it was certainly a step in the right direction! All I hope is that this will be contagious and we will see Federer, Djokovic, Davidenko, Cilic and others a lot more at the net in the future! Sergio Cruz
In many ways Federer is much like the man he succeeded at the All England Club in 2001. Federer showed his former idol the door with a sensational performance. The fourth-round thriller ended Sampras' remarkable reign - at least for the moment. Sampras held a set point in the opening tiebreaker, but Federer erased it with a service winner. Sampras then lost the set four points later when he dumped an easy backhand into the net, and the battle was on. Wearing a bandana and ponytail, Federer looks nothing like Sampras but plays with the same stylish ease and seems comfortable at the net. Much of the time the modest and unassuming Swiss star had the better serve, and he confidently closed out the third set with three consecutive service winners and an ace that kicked up chalk. Sampras played his best tennis in the final two sets, smashing serves at up to 136 mph and looking like the champion of old at the net. Serving in the final game, he misplayed two volleys and fell behind 15-40. Federer then played a superb return winner - something he had done repeatedly over the previous 3 1/2 hours - and fell to his knees with glee before keeling over onto the turf. The usually composed player could no longer hide his emotions and broke down with tears of joy.
