Australian Open Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the gentle giant with a Winning attitude!
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one of my favorite players on the ATP tour.
Jo-Wilfried does not limit himself at clinical wins,
or dissecting opponents as if he was in a morgue! Tsonga creates excitement, takes
risks, makes some horrid mistakes, but so what? The crowed wants human
beings on court, who they can identify with, pull for, suffer for and also cheer
for!
Today at Melbourne Park, Jo-Wilfred was just that and defeated a worthy opponent
Tommy Haas to reach the round of 16 at Australian Open 2010.
Tsonga's serve proved to be the difference and the stats are unforgiving,
Jo-Wilfred tallied 20 aces versus 9 for Haas.
Jo-Wilfred went through a racket brand change this often can be lethal for young players.
From my perspective the racket has bettered his service, but of the ground it
seems that Tsonga neither is as penetrating or accurate as with his 'old' racket.
This could be just my impression, but I have the feeling that players who can
absorbe
that first blow and will engage in rallies with Jo-Wilfred will give him plenty
of headaches!
Lets wait and see.
Today tennis won, both Tommy and Jo-Wilfred showed the whole range of skills
which makes tennis the great game it is!
Both players, besides displaying an awesome array of powerful baseline shot
making, sprinkled with flashy
winners and net forays finished with exquisite drop angle volleys or mighty
put away smashes to the crowd's delight!
Haas was probably the more versatile and creative of the two. But excessive creativity
can also be a bad thing and it proved to be so in a second attempt by Tommy, at 5-5 in the
fourth set, at an inside out backhand short volley which gave Tsonga an easy pass opportunity
and the chance serve to close out the match 6-4 3-6 6-1 7-5.
Next in line is a match-up with No. 26 seed Nicolas Almagro the Spaniard who beat Colombian
Alejandro Falla in straight sets earlier in the day 6-4 6-3 6-4.
This is the kind of player Tsonga can have trouble with, the lesser know dark horse who has knocked
very hard at the door of pretty big names, Nadal to mention one
(ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris France Hard R32 Nadal, Rafael 3-6, 7-6(2),
7-5), with a huge baseline game and the willingness to run everything down.
