How much inspiration does one need to play tennis? PDF Print E-mail
Mar 09, 2010 at 02:39 AM

A few weeks ago I made a facebook friendship with a very nice person Mrs. Nancy Richey.

From the beginning I knew she was the sister of famous tennis player Cliff Richey.

* Number one ranked professional tennis player in the United States (1970)
* Most Valuable Player on the victorious Davis Cup national team (1970)
* Won the first World Point Title (Pepsi-Cola Grand Prix) (1970)
* 45 tournament titles over the span of a 26-year career (1964-92) including:
o Canadian Open (1969)
o South African Open (1972)
o U.S.Indoors (1968)
o U.S.Claycourts (1966, 1970)
o South American Championships (1966, 1967)
o Western Open (1965, 1966, 1969)
o Legends Senior Tour Championships (1983)
* U.S. Open semifinalist (1970, 1972)
* French Open Semifinalist (1970)
* Founding member, Association of Tennis Professionals (1972)
* With sister Nancy Richey, formed the best brother/sister combination in the history of tennis

Trying to be conspicuous (hard for me to do) I did not mention to Nancy, how much I admired and respected Cliff.

Sure enough as the days went by and postings on my wall and others changed, one of them caught my attention:

Nancy Richey Cliff will be going to Dallas for the Winners for Life Foundation annual Gala ...his good friend and two time Super Bowl Champion, Donny Anderson, helps kids with scholarships through his foundation...Cliff will have his book "Acing Depression" as part of the celebrity auction...the Gala is on March 11th...preorder his... new book at http://www.amazon.com/Acing-Depression-Tennis-Champions-Toughest/dp/0942257669/ref=pd_ts_b_20?ie=UTF8&s=books

Dear Nancy, as a very young boy in Africa and later on in Europe I eared and read about this fantastic tennis player Cliff Richey, who ran every ball down and attacked furiously and courageously.

For many years Cliff, Ken, Rod, Pancho and many others were my practice partners at the wall where I spent so many hours in such honorable company.

Please say thank you to Cliff for me, his book will be treasured in my shelf.

Nancy Richey
Hello there Sergio...will definitely tell Cliff you followed his career...I think you had excellent company at the wall for your practice with those great players!...know you will enjoy Cliff's book as there are many great tennis stories no one has ever heard plus his battle with depression and how he also battled that and has such a heart to help... See More those fellow sufferers out there and to give them hope to hang in there ..thank you so much for writing...it will give Cliff a boost to hear he was an inspiration to a young guy coming up in the game...be blessed...Nancy

Eager to share Cliff Richey's story with others I posted in my wall:

Sergio...thank you so much for your kind words...glad I could accompany you at the wall with some of the all times greats!..hope you enjoy my book--there are some really good tennis stories of those "wall buddies" ..let me know what you think...warmest regards, Cliff Richey

Sergio Cruz
Cliff, you were and are an inspiration to me and millions of others. For me you epitomized this famous quote from Mark Twain: "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."
If your book is a hundredth as good as you are, it is fantastic!
Thanks for all you gave and continue to give to tennis and others.
Warmest regards, Sergio

Seeking excellence is one of the hardest tasks one can try to accomplish, but one of the most soul rewarding ones.

You see tennis, life, inspiration, desire to excel, are there in everyday examples from the great ones, like Pancho Gonzales, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Cliff Richey, Roy Emerson, Lew Hoad, Boris Becker, Harry Hopman, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and many others!

Then again if you think or look really deep into yourself, why would we need external inspiration to play a fun game such as tennis is, when...

Hope you Enjoyed!
