Is 'modern' tennis training as fabulous as is billed to be?
According to the video below at frame 2:30
and in almost every exercise with weights it is obvious that all the talk about
how improved is the training of top
tennis players is a bunch of hogwash!
The video sequence you are about to see is filmed in no less than the 'Cathedral'
of Swiss Tennis at no less than the 'National Leistungszentrum (High Performance Center) in Biel -Switzerland'
with instruction provided by a Swiss Tennis Federation trainer.
Tennis TV experts, journalists, columnists and the whole media band wagon,
constantly try to drum onto our heads how much better tennis players are today
and how many advances have been made in the physical training of athletes. After
watching the training video from Roger Federer I have to scoff at all of that
verbose and
in some instances even have to laugh.
First, there is not a single sequence in Roger Federers training that was not
used 30, 40 and even 50 years ago, with different equipment but the same result.
Second, if Harry Hopman watched the sequence of footwork training from
Federer, he would get the trainer out of the court! Yep, Harry Hopman was indeed
an exceptional Coach, media 'experts' lauding today's tennis training did not
see Harry Hopman in a real training session!
Third, exercise with weights in apnea* (at frames 2:30 in this video
and in almost all exercises with weights) it is absolutely ridiculous and
definitely not an advance in training as it is so much lauded by media experts. Anyway if
the Nr. 1 tennis player in the world is still alive and it works, who cares if
one could get a mild or even serious lung, brain or heart injury because of
improper breathing while exercising!
*Apnea, apnoea, or apnœa (Greek: to
breathe) is a term for suspension of external breathing. Under normal conditions,
humans cannot store much oxygen in the body. Prolonged apnea leads to severe
lack of oxygen in the blood circulation. Permanent brain damage can occur after
as little as three minutes and death will inevitably ensue after a few more
minutes unless ventilation is restored. However, under special circumstances
such as hypothermia, hyperbaric oxygenation, apneic oxygenation or
extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, much longer periods of apnea may be
tolerated without severe consequences. (Wikipedia.com)
Once you observe the video below as I did, your view of the training in the modern
tennis game will change.
For me the following is no surprise:
-Why Roger Federer plays tennis with
is head-sideways.
- Why most tennis players can not volley in tune with their baseline
games (RF included)
-Why tennis players are afraid to
serve and volley (even when it is
the obvious thing to do)
- Why most of them have no idea
how to mount an attack
and if they do they will do it cross court 8 out of 10 times (when the opposite
should be the case!).
Still according to the 'experts' tennis players today are fitter and better
technically then ever!
Sure they may be fitter and it would never come to my mind that tennis
players and the least of all Roger Federer, would ever cross the line and take
performance enhancing drugs to boost physical, mental and tennis
performance.
Nevertheless, after seeing the video and realizing how much of a cottage
industry tennis training is over all, I would be very curious to know what the
World Anti-Doping Agency thinks about performance enhancing drugs like
EPO - HGH. These in particular due to difficulties in testing have not been properly controlled in tennis for the last 25 years.
EPO
for example provides an undetectable boost of up to 50 percent in athletic performance!(24 hrs after injected is undetectable!) MAMA MIA!MAMA MIA!
However it is totally irrelevant that a study by Rice
University scientists and other studies reveal thatEPO'In this later
circumstance the individual develops anemia as a result of the body’s reaction
against repeated EPO injections.'
In spite of that, it is inconclusive that
in clinical studies since 2002 in the
New England Journal of Medicine Thirteen such cases were described by
Casadevall et al conclude, 'Evidence indicates that recombinant EPO can induce pure red cell aplasia'
Pure Red Cell Aplasia
It also proves absolutely nothing that other studies conclude that mononucleosis is a form of blood anemia
and or aplasia.
Notwithstanding this studies, itdoes not
in any form shape or way make me think that these cases of mononucleosis in tennis
sited below, are due to the use of EPO, because I do not believe that tennis players would ever cheat to increase their
performance. Besides, mononucleosis can be an infection that can also be caused by the
Epstein-Barr virus. Therefore this alarming situation must be just a complete aberration and anyway the ATP, WTA and ITF would never let anyone get away with such
blatant cheating, if there was any!
Here is a list of cases of mononucleosis in tennis:
JUSTINE HENIN and ANDY MURRAY ‘Djokovic advances, sick Murray out of Dubai tennis
….
The worry is that Murray is developing a form of
mononucleosis (glandular fever), something which hit
Federer last year, and contributed to Justine Henin’s retirement
in 2008. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5g9t2YFPTdJJoTWVLTDzliLsSkbhA

JOHN ISNER ‘Roddick, Blake fall; Federer survives
Isner — who led Georgia to the 2007 NCAA team tennis
championship — lost in the first round at five consecutive major
tournaments until this one. He missed three months this season
from mid-April to mid-July with mononucleosis ,
but Saturday’s victory will push him into the top 50 in the
rankings. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/usopen09/news/story?id=4448320

Addendum:
MARION BARTOLI, Third-seeded Bartoli, who continues to make progress after returning from a bout of suspected mononucleosis so debilitating that she struggled to get out of bed for the first half of last season, said: 'I know I haven't played my best tennis tonight, but I tried, and it was a great final, I think.' http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/tennis/stepaneks-plan-no-surprise/2009/01/10/1231004362729.html?page=2
RADEK STEPANEK, Stepanek was leading 5-7, 7-6(7) 4-1 and had hit 12 aces after two hours and 24 minutes of play. The Czech was sidelined for two-and-a-half months due to mononucleosis earlier in the year. He reached the Brisbane International final (l. to Roddick) and has a 12-11 match record.

WARNING: Do not jump to conclusions, this list does not imply that any of the players on it, are cheaters or are doing anything illegal or
unethical.
David
Howman who commenced work for WADA as Chief Operating
Officer/Special Counsel in March 2003,
stated that:
"We are catching the dopey dopers, but not the sophisticated
ones," and that "It is pathetic.
We must increase quality and efficiency if we want to continue
the fight." David
Howman
Now, am I accusing anyone on the ATP, WTA or in tennis of doping? Of course not! No one can prove it, not even the WADA (The
World Anti-Doping Agency)!
Athletes keep yourselves well informed, do not allow greed or money take the most precious thing you have, your life!
ATTENTION:
-
I do not approve the use of illegal (PEDs)
performance enhancing drugs by athletes or
anyone.
- Medicines were developed to treat people and not to be used as performance enhancing drugs.
- Athletes using PRDs risk:
INCREASED MORTALITY, SERIOUS CARDIOVASCULAR EVENTS, THROMBOEMBOLIC EVENTS, STROKE, INCREASED RISK OF TUMOR PROGRESSION OR RECURRENCE AND MANY MORE DANGERS AND CONSEQUENCES
After considering the ethics and impeccable behavior that is expected from players by the ATP, WTA, ITF and WADA,
it is obvious to me that fate, hard luck, probably poor dieting and inadequate training methods, befell all of
these tennis players and none of these cases of mononucleosis are a consequence of EPO abuse,
but rather the price you pay to push your bodies to the limit of the possible
and the impossible.
So, if the 'experts' are correct and players are fitter then ever, why are so many
players victims of mononucleosis?
Why does a Federer at around 20 years old train weights in apnea?
This leaves me with three simple answers:
- One, the overall training and diet of these players is poor, or they would not get anemia.
- Two, some trainers obviously do not know the most basic elements of training (breathing for example).
- Three, all this does is to re-enforce my idea that tennis training is still a cottage industry with plenty of question marks
left and one of them is, how much better trained really are the tennis players of today?
!!WARNING!! Athletes and fans
DO NOT get tempted by the benefits of EPO use! EPO was created for persons in need of Medical
treatment NOT FOR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE!
EPO can kill you!
It has killed approximately 18 pro cyclists in the past fifteen years! (Written in 2005 EPO)
EPO Medical side effects:
- EPO commonly "thickens" blood which causes additional circulatory strain as
well as damming (clotting) in smaller blood vessels.
- Elevation of blood pressure
- Sudden death during sleep
- Pure red-cell aplasia (a condition which, though rare, can lead to permanent
blood transfusion dependency).
- EPO use is dangerous as it stresses elements in the circulation and quite
often is sufficient to precipitate systemic failures that otherwise would
function normally under natural levels of stress.
Minor side effects include: diarrhea, dizziness, headache, itching, muscle aches
and pains, nausea, pain at the site of injection, tiredness, or vomiting.
Nothing can replace plain good hard training, it is the reason why we do sports, to extend the limits of
our capabilities in an honest clean way.
Stay away from drugs!
Hope you enjoyed!

Comment by Fadi on 2010-04-29 06:02:17 Hi; My name is Fadi, I'm a sport fan. I want to talk about the way that the ITF covering doping cases in tennis, and I want to ask you about a strange phenomenon in tennis thesedays.
First; I want to tell you that there is a petition from Dr.Klass Faber and Dr.Michael Burke abut the ITF doping machinery and Martina hingis case, and I hope that you sign it too! http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/thresholds/
Second of all; I want to ask you about the stange phenomenon: why in the past few years the top tennis players in both ATP,WTA (especially NIKE-WILSON players) disappear after the GS tournaments? is this the reason: first they juiced before the start of the year to prepare to the first GS tournament, after they introduce a great performance and get a great result they fake an injury or losing in the beginning rounds, and they prefer to promote to themselves and for their sponsors (more reputation, more mony). So in this way they can avoid the EBO test (the EBO test is not in the out of competition rule), and if they receive a urine test they can miss it easily (according to the WADA or ITF rules-I'm not sure- the player can miss 2 tests in 18 months period without any questions). in this short retirement they juice again to prepare to the next GS tournaments (another 1 million$ and 2000 points). In the past, in much stronger seasons, the top players (such as Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles....etc) they were domenating all the season not just the Grand Slam tournaments, they always reached 10 finals at least. Last year Serena Williams won just 3 tournaments in the weakest season in tennis hestory, and those tournament is Wimbledon, Australian open and the end tournament of the season!!! and it looks that's what will happen this year too, for the all top players in both ATP,WTA. What is your opinion?!
About doping in tennis; unfortunately, the press don't enlighten the fans about the doping cases in tennis, and the way that the ITF covering it. They still talking about the tennis as a clean sport!!! will you tell me your opinion about these information that I found: 1_Covering names of 47 players who tested positive in 2004: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/indepth/drugs/stories/top10.html 2_Covering names of 7 players who tested positive between 2002 and 2003: http://www.playthegame.org/news/detailed/new-book-professional-tennis-in-doping-scandal-1350.html 3_Covering the out of competition 2009 list. I found just 47 names from the 91 players in this link: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=314727 4_many information about doping in tennis from this site http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com/2010/04/flashback.html http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-16811203.html http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com/2010/04/second-hand-excuse.html http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-beat-steroid-test.html http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com/2009/07/thasp-interview-with-dr-charles-yesalis.html http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com/2009/03/steroid-positive-players-to-date.html 5_The number of EBO test and the other tests: http://tennisplanet.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/doping-in-tennis-thanks/ http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/10/sports/tennis/10doping.html?_r=1
I found this report about Serena Williams injury in this link: http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com/2010/04/bandage-strategies.html I think it is absolutely right about that she is faking the injury, ask Nathalie Tauziat about that (the link above), she said in her book in 2000 that every long break because of an injury, must be concider as a silent ban ( in 2000 Venus did not play the first 6 month!!). But I think the tennis is full of these stories, look to the belgins (especially Henin) she always claims that she had an unknown virus just before many grand salm tournaments that she won it or reached the final at least (she start that strategy since 2004) , I think she claimed that just to take a medicine contains an illagel drugs. and suddenly she lost all her power in 2009 although she was not ill !! and retire from tennis for almost 2 years!! could you count how many time she claimed the ill !!
Comment by Sergio Cruz on 2010-05-04 07:19:44 Fadi,
You have plenty of strong elements which point at a very gray situation in tennis as far as doping controls and procedures are concerned.
Obviously the list of players who missed doping controls is dilettante because it only shows one year, nevertheless, the players names in it make it serious, especially considering that EPO for example is undetectable 24 hours after use: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=314727

Comment by Anonymous on 2010-05-04 07:17:36 There is corruption and incompetence in the administration of sports drug testing. This is the issue that needs to be addressed.
