What happened in the French Open yesterday? Defending champion Roger Federer vs. Peter Luczak Game set and Match Federer 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 The illusion of a challenge seemed to permeate through the 1st set, but Peter Luczak himself never believed he could do it and so it remained an illusion. Roger Federer said; “Finally got a chance again at 5-4, so it was a good first set for me, without any hiccups on my own serve. After that things were a bit easier. He had to push it a bit more, I could relax a bit more, and then the score-line changed and towards the end I played some great drop shots. So it was like a perfect match to get off the French Open campaign.” Andy Murray vs. Richard Gasquet Game, set and Match Murray 4-6 6-7(5) 6-4 6-2 6-1
Gasquet was dead before he started! I do not understand
why a tennis player who has two or three French Federation
coaches on the side lines decides to schedule a tournament to
win which lasted until Saturday! Do they think the kid is
superman?!?!
After four hours and four minutes Murray won, but it is important to note that if stiffly challenged physically Andy Murray might just cramp over and all the signs where there in the middle of the second set, luckily for Murray, Gasquet did not realize it (neither did his coaching staff) and failed to make Andy work harder for each point. Serena Williams vs. Stefanie Voegele Game, set and Match Williams Murray 7-6(2) 6-2 Stefanie put up a valiant fight but in boxing terms it was an uneven fight, it would be identical to Manny Pacquiao World welterweight champion against Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko. No chance! Novak Djokovic vs. Evgeny Korolev Game, set and Match Djokovic 6-1 3-6 6-1 6-3 Amazing how an already established and experienced player like Djokovic goes through these mental lapses/voids in a major tournament! The slip up on the second set could have been very costly and energy wise it is something a player can not afford, that is if he has any aspirations at winning the French Open. Anyway I still ask myself what was all of that about adding Todd Martin to his coaching staff to add the serve and volley and the attacking dimension to his game? The young man goes to the net as much as Aunt Jemima was the maker of pancakes! Gael Monfils vs. Dieter Kindlmann Game, set and Match Monfils 6-3 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2 Same as Djokovic with the added aggravation that I do not see an jota of improvement in Monfils game, attitude or technique. This is a huge player with great athletic possibilities and here he is playing a less aggressive game then Chris Evert in the 1970ies! That much for the Coaching profession. Stanislas Wawrinka vs Jan Hajek Game, set and Match Wawrinka 6-1 6-3 6-3 This is a very good player with two major challenges, mobility and Roger Federer. An ox like build with plenty of fire power especially on the serve and backhand, but slow...slow...slow. Will he make it past Monfils to break down like a mental midget as he did against Federer in Madrid? Hope not! For the sake of the tournament I hope he gives Federer a run for his money, but first Monfils! Marcos Baghdatis vs. Jesse Witten Game, set and Match Baghdatis 6-3 6-4 6-3 Jesse Witten a player that impressed me at Wimbledon last year with his creativity and variation, obviously not ready for the rigor of European clay and took a humbling defeat to rising Baghdatis. Even though Baghdatis can play an exciting game, with plenty of variation and swift accelerations, the next station might prove to be the end one, M.Granollers. Tomas Berdych vs Jorge Aguilar Game, set and Match Berdych 7-6(7) 6-3 6-1 Thomas started his Roland Garros campaign on the right foot, but will his often self effacing, shy personality be his doom once again? It begs the question why have a coach if these things are not addressed? Well plenty more but I only have two eyes and finger peck this keyboard! :-) Sergio Cruz
