What happened in the French Open yesterday?

Venus Williams vs. Nadia Petrova
Game, set and Match Petrova  6-4 6-3
Petrova carried her momentum from the match against Rezai and dominated Venus.

Whatever players say does not always tell the true story!

The true story is, players watch each others matches in the looker room, on TV in their rooms or even at the site! Also they know when someone is 'hot' and the challenges ahead when that happens.

Venus had just come from a bashing against Aravane Rezai in Madrid and saw how 'hot' Petrova was and the way she held her own against Rezai, so Williams knew she had a gargantuan task ahead of her!

For Petrova on the other hand, after weathering 'Hurricane' Aravane, Venus was a nice breeze from the golf.

In other words Petrova beat Venus Williams on her match against Aravane Rezai!

Roger Federer vs. Stanislas Wawrinka
Game, set and Match Federer 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2
Let me make this clear before I go on, Federer is a fantastic player and I for one cherish the fact that he exists, because if it was not for Roger tennis today would be a field of 'robotonic' uncreative double handed, boring baseline tennis!

Having said that, as a former competitor myself I like to see hard fought tennis matches, not surrender matches!

Let me quickly explain this, from my point of view this is professional tennis and these players are playing in multi-million dollar events, get free hospitality in luxury hotels, free transportation, super V.I.P. treatment and gifts. The spectators are paying for seats sometimes in the thousands of dollars, sponsors are giving some players millions of dollar contracts, TV pays millions to broadcast these events all in all a multi billion dollar business!

What do we get?

For example Julian Reister who lost 6-4 6-0 6-4 to Federer, according to TV commentary, said that 'he would not have wanted to beat Federer because Federer is his idol'.

Please give me a break Julian, if that is your attitude when entering a professional match, next time just do not step on the tennis court please, get a medical excuse or something, but just do not play the match!

Wawrinka a nice guy and everything but, got his ego a bit bruised because he missed an easy volley in the second set tie-breaker against Federer and decided to completely surrender the third set!

What does the ATP do? Nothing!

What should the ATP do? No prize money for Reister, for talking like a loser and going against the players code of conduct! No prize money for Wawrinka, for not fighting and going against the ATP players code of conduct!

Do you think Federer would have anymore 'walks in the Park' like he often has after winning a set or two?  Bet you he would not!

Do you think these boys would play a little different the next time and that the tournaments would become much more competitive? Bet you they would!

Maria Sharapova vs. Justine Henin
Game set and Match Henin 6-2 3-6 6-3
Another two day thriller thanks to Sharopova not giving up!?

In the end the match resumes itself to one fundamental element of sports.

- The athlete with more skills generally wins. (Federer, Messi (soccer), Lindsay Von (Sky), Michael Schumacher (Formula 1), Wayne Gretsky (Hockey) and so on.

As much as Sharapova was willing to fight to win, her lack of variation and skills to rapidly switch from one mode to another, one stroke to another, one speed to another, was just not there.

So, Justine Henin won!
